Why the polar bear-like result drew attention

The result attracted unusual interest because it seemed biologically surprising yet not impossible.

A hidden ape surviving in the Himalayas would require evidence for an entirely unknown large primate population. An unusual bear lineage, by contrast, fit better with what was already known about Himalayan wildlife.
