Introduction
In cryptid investigations, a “mystery hair” is often treated as a potentially decisive piece of biological evidence. Yet many disputed results begin long before a laboratory analysis. Hair samples are frequently collected by hikers, hunters, enthusiasts or multiple intermediaries, sometimes days or weeks after discovery. Because modern DNA methods can detect extremely small amounts of genetic material, even minor handling mistakes can introduce human, pet or environmental DNA that becomes mixed with the original sample. The result may be an ambiguous laboratory finding, a misleading species identification or a sample that can no longer be interpreted confidently.
