The most dramatic cross-border change occurred when the legend spread into Mexico and the southern United States. Reports increasingly focused on strange hairless animals resembling dogs, coyotes or other canids. Several factors encouraged this shift. Unlike Puerto Rico’s original wave, many later sightings involved actual animals that people could photograph or capture.
