Introduction

Among all the evidence ever cited for Cadborosaurus, the alleged Pacific coast sea serpent nicknamed “Caddy”, no item has carried more weight than the 1937 Naden Harbour carcass. Unlike eyewitness sightings, this case involved a photographed body recovered from the stomach of a sperm whale at a British Columbia whaling station. For cryptozoologists, it appeared to be exactly the sort of physical evidence needed to move beyond testimony and folklore. Yet the case is remembered as much for what was lost as for what was found. The carcass itself vanished, no verified tissue samples survive, and modern DNA analysis cannot be performed. As a result, the most important alleged Cadborosaurus specimen remains trapped between intriguing photographs and untestable claims.[Cadborosaurus]cadborosaurus.caNaden Harbour CarcassNaden Harbour Carcass - CadborosaurusThe discovery and journey of the Naden Harbor carcass in 1937. Why the Naden Harbour carcass mattered

The Naden Harbour specimen was reportedly discovered in July 1937 during processing of a sperm whale caught off the coast of British Columbia. Whaling-station workers removed a slender carcass roughly 3.5 metres long from the whale’s stomach and photographed it before disposal. Witnesses described a creature with a dog-like or horse-like head, a long body and a distinctive tail, features that seemed unlike familiar marine animals.[Cadborosaurus]cadborosaurus.caNaden Harbour CarcassNaden Harbour Carcass - CadborosaurusThe discovery and journey of the Naden Harbor carcass in 1937. What made the case unusual was not merely the description but the existence of photographs. Sea-serpent reports typically rely on fleeting observations. Here, at least three images showed a tangible object laid out for examination. Decades later, supporters of Cadborosaurus continued to treat the photographs as the strongest single piece of evidence that an unknown marine vertebrate might once have existed along the Pacific coast.[Discovery UK]discoveryuk.comDiscovery UKCadborosaurus: North America's Legendary Sea SerpentApr 8, 2024 — Said carcass was found in the stomach of a baleen whale at…

The specimen was preserved briefly and transported for examination. According to contemporary accounts, museum director Francis Kermode tentatively regarded the remains as those of a fetal baleen whale. After that assessment, the material appears to have been discarded or otherwise lost. The photographs survived; the specimen did not.[Cadborosaurus]cadborosaurus.caNaden Harbour CarcassNaden Harbour Carcass - CadborosaurusThe discovery and journey of the Naden Harbor carcass in 1937. This distinction is crucial. A photograph can suggest possibilities, but a biological specimen can be measured, dissected and genetically tested. The Naden Harbour carcass crossed the threshold from sighting to physical evidence, then immediately fell back below it when the body disappeared.

How basking shark decay complicates the photos

The strongest conventional explanation is that the carcass was not an unknown sea serpent at all but a decomposing basking shark. Basking sharks have long played a central role in sea-monster controversies because their bodies change dramatically as they decay. Soft tissues around the head and gill region detach early, while the spinal column and parts of the skull remain. The resulting shape can resemble a long-necked marine reptile or sea serpent.[I Heart Cryptids]iheartcryptids.comcadborosaurus history evidence and sightingsThe most common explanation for “sea serpent” carcasses is the decomposing Basking Shark (Cetorhinus maximus).Read more…

Researchers who have re-examined the Naden Harbour photographs have argued that several apparent “monster” features may be products of decomposition:

  • The segmented appearance of the body can correspond to exposed shark vertebrae.
  • The elongated profile may reflect loss of tissue around the head and gill arches.
  • The tail shape can be interpreted as distorted shark anatomy rather than evidence of an unknown species.
  • Similar “pseudo-plesiosaur” carcasses have been documented elsewhere and repeatedly generated speculation about mysterious marine animals.[Tetrapod Zoology+2Modern Cryptozoology]tetzoo.comcadborosaurus carcass reviewTetrapod ZoologyThe Case of the Cadborosaurus Carcass: a ReviewNov 17, 2020 — In the case of the Naden Harbour carcass, Ben argued that t…

An additional complication is that sperm whales are known predators of large marine animals. Some researchers have noted that basking shark remains have occasionally been reported from whale stomachs, meaning the Naden Harbour recovery circumstances are not inherently inconsistent with a shark origin.[Tetrapod Zoology]tetzoo.comcadborosaurus carcass reviewTetrapod ZoologyThe Case of the Cadborosaurus Carcass: a ReviewNov 17, 2020 — In the case of the Naden Harbour carcass, Ben argued that t…

The photographs therefore sit at the centre of a persistent interpretive dispute. To proponents, they show a creature unlike known sharks. To sceptical investigators, they show exactly the sort of misleading morphology that decomposing sharks are famous for producing. Because the original specimen no longer exists, neither side can resolve the argument through direct re-examination.[The Guardian]theguardian.comThe Guardian Shark or sea monster? The Canadian marine mystery that still intrigues experts 90 years onNearly 90 years after a strange 3-meter-long carcass was pulled from…Caddy illustration 2

What vanished tissue means for the claim

The missing biological material is the central weakness in the Naden Harbour case.[cadborosaurus.ca]cadborosaurus.caNaden Harbour CarcassNaden Harbour Carcass - CadborosaurusThe discovery and journey of the Naden Harbor carcass in 1937. The 10 foot creature fou…

If even a small verified sample had survived, modern methods could potentially test competing explanations. DNA sequencing, protein analysis and microscopic examination might distinguish among a fetal whale, a basking shark or an unknown animal. Such techniques have clarified other marine-carcass controversies that once seemed mysterious.[The Guardian]theguardian.comThe Guardian Shark or sea monster? The Canadian marine mystery that still intrigues experts 90 years onNearly 90 years after a strange 3-meter-long carcass was pulled from…

Instead, the chain of evidence broke. Reports indicate that tissue was sent for examination, but no authenticated specimen is known to remain in a museum collection. Without preserved material, there is no way to perform the kinds of analyses that would now be routine in zoology.[Cadborosaurus]cadborosaurus.caNaden Harbour CarcassNaden Harbour Carcass - CadborosaurusThe discovery and journey of the Naden Harbor carcass in 1937. The 10 foot creature fou…

This creates a classic evidential asymmetry:<div class="content-enhancement content-enhancement--insight-grid" markdown="1">

  • Supporters can argue that the photographs depict something unusual.
  • Critics can propose known-animal explanations.
  • Neither side can test its position against the original biological evidence.</div>

Why the case still matters in cryptozoology

The Naden Harbour carcass illustrates both the promise and the frustration of cryptozoological evidence. It came closer than most sea-serpent cases to providing a recoverable specimen. Unlike distant sightings, there was a body, witnesses, photographs and an opportunity for scientific examination.[Cadborosaurus]cadborosaurus.caNaden Harbour CarcassNaden Harbour Carcass - CadborosaurusThe discovery and journey of the Naden Harbor carcass in 1937. The 10 foot creature fou…

Yet it also demonstrates how quickly potentially decisive evidence can disappear. Today, the surviving photographs are detailed enough to inspire debate but insufficient to establish a new species. The missing tissue means the question that matters most—what the carcass actually was—cannot be answered through modern genetics.[The Guardian]theguardian.comThe Guardian Shark or sea monster? The Canadian marine mystery that still intrigues experts 90 years onNearly 90 years after a strange 3-meter-long carcass was pulled from…

For that reason, the Naden Harbour specimen remains the sea monster carcass that got away. It is one of the strongest physical exhibits ever associated with Cadborosaurus, and at the same time one of the clearest examples of how the absence of preserved biological evidence can keep a mystery unresolved long after the photographs have become famous.[Cadborosaurus]cadborosaurus.caNaden Harbour CarcassNaden Harbour Carcass - CadborosaurusThe discovery and journey of the Naden Harbor carcass in 1937.
