One of the most persistent misunderstandings in discussions of cryptozoology is the assumption that a “cryptic species” is simply a scientific term for a cryptid. In biology, however, the word cryptic has a very specific meaning. A cryptic species is a real, existing species that closely resembles another species and is only recognised as distinct through careful scientific investigation.
