Could a Journal Make Cryptozoology Scientific?

The ISC journal gave cryptozoology a scholarly-looking venue, but publication alone could not make hidden-animal claims zoologically accepted.

Introduction

In the 1980s, the International Society of Cryptozoology (ISC) attempted something unusual: it tried to transform cryptozoology from a loose collection of monster reports and hidden-animal investigations into a recognised scientific speciality. Its main instrument was Cryptozoology: Interdisciplinary Journal of the International Society of Cryptozoology, an annual publication that ran from 1982 to 1996. The journal gave the field many of the outward signs of academic legitimacy—editorial oversight, specialist articles, reviews, debates and a dedicated scholarly venue.[Online Books Page+2Cryptid Archives]onlinebooks.library.upenn.eduOnline Books PageCryptozoology archivesCryptozoology began in 1982. By the time the ISC collapsed in the late 1990s, cryptozoology remained largely outside mainstream zoology. The failure illustrates an important lesson about scientific professionalisation: journals can help organise a field, but they cannot substitute for widely accepted evidence, institutional support, or a distinctive and productive research programme.[Journal of Scientific Exploration]journalofscientificexploration.orgJournal of Scientific ExplorationRediscovering Cryptozoology as an Integrative ScienceMarch 24, 2026 — The International Society for Cryp…Published: March 24, 2026

What Cryptozoology Published and Signalled

The journal was designed to show that cryptozoology could operate according to scientific norms. It published original research papers, field reports, book reviews, comments and responses, and discussions of disputed animals. Library records described it as an interdisciplinary journal, and the ISC presented itself as a focal point for investigation, analysis and publication relating to unusual animal reports.[Cryptid Archives+2SIRIS]cryptidarchives.fandom.comCryptid ArchivesCryptozoology (journal)Cryptozoology was a scientific journal published by the International Society of Cryptozoology fro…

This mattered symbolically. Academic disciplines often have journals that allow specialists to communicate with one another, establish terminology, debate methods and accumulate a body of literature. The ISC consciously adopted this model. The journal’s existence signalled that cryptozoology was trying to become more than popular entertainment or folklore collecting.[Scientific American]scientificamerican.comScientific AmericanThe inaugural issue of The Journal of CryptozoologyDec 22, 2012 — In 1982, the International Society of Cryptozoology…

The publication also helped standardise concepts. During the ISC era, the term “cryptid” was introduced and promoted as a technical label for animals whose existence had not been scientifically confirmed. Creating such terminology was part of a broader effort to define a coherent subject matter and establish professional boundaries.[Academia]academia.eduA Review of Cryptozoology: Towards a Scientific ApproachA Review of Cryptozoology: Towards a Scientific Approach…January 1, 2015 — Cryptozoology is still generally considered a non-a…Published: January 1, 2015

However, creating the appearance of a scholarly community is not the same as creating a discipline recognised by the wider scientific world.

Why a Specialist Journal Was Not Enough

A successful scientific field normally gains legitimacy because its publications contain results that other scientists can test, use and build upon. The ISC journal struggled with this requirement because cryptozoology’s central subjects were often defined by the absence of decisive evidence.

Many papers dealt with creatures such as Bigfoot, lake monsters, surviving prehistoric animals, or other disputed organisms known primarily through sightings, stories, tracks, photographs or fragmentary physical traces. Critics argued that such evidence was generally insufficient to establish the existence of the animals being discussed. As a result, publication did not generate the cumulative process of confirmation and replication that characterises recognised scientific disciplines.[Academia]academia.eduA Review of Cryptozoology: Towards a Scientific ApproachA Review of Cryptozoology: Towards a Scientific Approach…January 1, 2015 — Cryptozoology is still generally considered a non-a…Published: January 1, 2015

Another problem was that the journal existed largely within a self-contained intellectual community. Scientific journals become influential when researchers outside the immediate field read, cite and use their findings. Cryptozoology never achieved that level of integration. Mainstream zoologists generally continued to regard the field as speculative, and cryptozoological literature rarely became essential reading for zoological research programmes.[ResearchGate]researchgate.netResearchGate(PDF) A Review of Cryptozoology: Towards a Scientific…Cryptozoology is still generally considered a non-academic disciplin…

The journal also faced a deeper conceptual difficulty. Standard zoology already investigates unknown animals, documents new species and studies poorly understood populations. Critics therefore questioned whether cryptozoology possessed a unique methodology or research object that justified a separate discipline. If zoologists already search for undiscovered species, then a dedicated cryptozoological literature risks appearing redundant rather than foundational.[Academia]academia.eduA Review of Cryptozoology: Towards a Scientific ApproachA Review of Cryptozoology: Towards a Scientific Approach…January 1, 2015 — Cryptozoology is still generally considered a non-a…Published: January 1, 2015

In effect, the ISC journal provided a publication venue, but it did not solve the underlying question of why cryptozoology needed to exist separately from zoology.ISC Journal illustration 2

The Evidence Problem Could Not Be Solved by Publishing

The strongest obstacle was empirical rather than organisational.

What Mainstream Recognition Would Have Required

The ISC experiment suggests that professionalisation required more than institutional mimicry.

A journal, society and conference structure can help organise a field, but mainstream recognition would likely have required several additional developments:

  • Repeated empirical successes, such as well-documented discoveries that originated from cryptozoological investigations and were accepted by zoologists.
  • Methodological distinctiveness, showing that cryptozoology contributed investigative tools or research strategies not already present in zoology.
  • Integration with existing science, including citation, collaboration and participation within mainstream biological research networks.
  • Stable institutional support, such as university programmes, research funding and enduring professional organisations.[Academia+2Journal of Scientific Exploration]academia.eduA Review of Cryptozoology: Towards a Scientific ApproachA Review of Cryptozoology: Towards a Scientific Approach…January 1, 2015 — Cryptozoology is still generally considered a non-a…Published: January 1, 2015

Even some sympathetic analyses of cryptozoology have argued that a genuinely scientific version of the field would require a stronger institutional base and a new generation of researchers operating according to accepted zoological standards. The existence of a journal alone was never enough.[Academia]academia.eduA Review of Cryptozoology: Towards a Scientific ApproachA Review of Cryptozoology: Towards a Scientific Approach…January 1, 2015 — Cryptozoology is still generally considered a non-a…Published: January 1, 2015ISC Journal illustration 3
